Shopmobility is a scheme which provides manual or powered wheelchairs, and powered scooters on short term loan basis to members of the public who are restricted due to their lack of mobility to shop, visit leisure and commercial facilities within the City Centre. At Preston Shopmobility, we do just that. We provide on a short term loan basis, wheelchairs and scooters to those people who benefit from mobility aids when in a city centre environment.
Who can use Shopmobility?
The equipment is available whether your disability is temporary, long term or permanent. Shopmobility gives you the freedom to get around the city. You do not need to be registered disabled to use it.
Preston Community Transport reserves the right to refuse to loan equipment to anyone it judges unsuitable to use it. It is unlikely that anyone under the age of 17years would be judged suitable to use powered equipment.
How much does it cost?
Each time you borrow a powered scooter or electric wheelchair there will be a charge of £3.00, and a charge of £1.50 for the loan of a manual wheelchair. This charge helps towards the maintenance and upkeep of the equipment. Membership of Preston Community Transport is free. Please note; The first time you use the equipment, you will be asked to provide two forms of identification, one of which must show your name and address.
When can I use Shopmobility?
This service is available Monday to Saturday, 9.00am to 4:30pm. The service does not operate on Bank Holidays. Bookings can be made in advance by telephoning 01772 204 667. For your added convenience, parking is available outside the Mobility Centre.
Is the equipment easy to use?
Familiarisation training is given to every new user before the equipment is loaned out. You are free to go once you and our staff are confident with you in control of the vehicle. Most people find the equipment very straight forward to operate and the whole process takes no longer than 30 minutes. In fact in most cases, you will be off in half that!
"I was reluctant to use the scooter at first, but now I realise just how much more shopping I can get done and still have energy left when I return home."
